I currently work in an economically disadvantagedurban school district. My district won NSBA's national top technology using district award in 2004 and we've gone way beyond where we were when we won that, so we've proven that poverty is not a roadblock to good technology. Right now my burning interest is gaming in the classroom, but I'm also heavily invested into MP3 players for learning and digital resources.

Without minimizing the importance of Web 2.0 in the scheme of things, I would hope that our audience, who are leaders versus practitioners, would have enough background with wikis, blogs and podcsting to not get bogged down in how to do it but rather concrete examples of why you would do it and the impact on achievement. I'd really like to stick with real examples of how something is being used and why it is increasing achievement. That's my take on this.GJ
<ins>L</ins>

The site uses a login/network similiar to that of facebook, where networks are created solely based on the end of an educational email system such as .edu, or .k12.wi.us, etc... Students use the application to add courses, take notes, and share notes with others in the network. There is an RSS on courses, so if a fellow student in Biology 120<del> just</del><ins> just</ins> added some new notes and chose to share them, you will be up to date. The system also allows you to create discussion forums within the courses. An extensive search funtion, recently created notes page, and the ability to browse by year, subject, course, semester, will allow students to access notes from past years/courses quickly.
I have been in the field of education for 31 years, starting as a middle school social studies teacher. I am currently working as a consultant, writer, blogger, podcaster, programmer and public speaker -- doing business as The Landmark Project. My current interests are 21st century literacy, understanding, and finding and inventing applications for Web 2.0 applications, and video games as learning engines.
Ginger Jewell:
public<ins> settings,</ins> and as a university<del> professor</del><ins> professor,</ins> so I've seen the issues from different perspectives. I<del> currenlty</del><ins> currently</ins> work in an economically disadvantagedurban school district. My district won NSBA's national top technology using district award in 2004 and we've gone way beyond where we were when we won<del> that</del><ins> that,</ins> so we've proven that poverty is not a roadblock to good technology. Right now my burning interest is gaming in the classroom, but I'm also heavily invested into MP3 players for learning and digital resources.
Dan Schmit:
I am an Apple Distinguished Educator, and have been working in education for about 15 years. I began my work as music educator and I have taught Kindergarten through high school. I worked for the Nebraska Department of Education doing instructional technology staff development and software exploration for a couple of years before joining the University of Nebraska as an Instructional Technology Specialist.
<ins>I've been in the field 28 years and I've been hooked on technology for 27 of them. I've worked in rural, suburban and urban districts, in private and public and as a university professor so I've seen the issues from different perspectives. I currenlty work in an economically disadvantagedurban school district. My district won NSBA's national top technology using district award in 2004 and we've gone way beyond where we were when we won that so we've proven that poverty is not a roadblock to good technology. Right now my burning interest is gaming in the classroom, but I'm also heavily invested into MP3 players for learning and digital resources.</ins>
Dan Schmit:
I am an Apple Distinguished Educator, and have been working in education for about 15 years. I began my work as music educator and I have taught Kindergarten through high school. That's my take on this.</ins>

Opinions?
Related to this is the question of breadth vs. depth. I should be embarrassed to admit this but I (Judy) am pushing for breadth because I think the audience is looking to you for a whole bunch of great ideas and inspiration from you -- including things they haven't even seen yet. I see the afternoon EduBloggerCon session as allowing participants to return to some of these technologies and share their own thoughts and experiences, which takes some of the pressure off of you to do as much as of the WHY as you would have otherwise. On the other hand, just doing the WHAT part could be superficial and sound like technology for technology's sake. So I guess the goal is a balance. Over to you:
I agree with you and Vicki here. Why don't you, Judy, introduce each of us with a short paragraph. We could even have a slide with our vita, and get right to the topics.
Wireless - WI-MAX. I could touch on this for just a minute if you would like. It is a deep topic, technicallity wise. But I could compare briefly the difference between a wireless access pointthat covers a section ofschool buildingversus a wireless access point that covers asection of a city.Tom
MyWeb 2.0 Up and Coming App of the Year- www.notecentric.com - A "Social Noteworking Site". Imade that last part up. Developed by an actual student at the University of New Mexico using Ruby on Rails. The site uses a login/network similiar to that of facebook, where networks are created solely based on the end of an educational email system such as .edu, or .k12.wi.us, etc... Students use the application to add courses, take notes, and share notes with others in the network. There is an RSS on courses, so if a fellow student in Biology 120just added some new notes and chose to share them, you will be up to date. The system also allows you to create discussion forums within the courses. An extensive search funtion, recently created notes page, and the ability to browse by year, subject, course, semester, will allow students to access notes from past years/courses quickly. Tom
week.<del> Tom</del><ins> TomWii</ins><ins> Outsells</ins><ins> PS3</ins><ins> in</ins><ins> U.S.</ins><ins> $13</ins><ins> Billion</ins><ins> Dollar</ins><ins> Market</ins>
Sony Playstation 3 also with a web browser, will be putting out a Beta version of their virtual 3D world. Too big of a topic for me though.
Handhelds, the Sequel - This would tie in with Vicki's SmartPhones. As Ultra-Mobile PCs and devices like the Nokia Internet Tablet drop in cost (and SmartPhones get smarter, and videogame devices like the PSP get wireless connectivity and browsers), ubiquitous net access becomes more and more of a reality, and will definitely be an integral part of our students' futures. - Conn

Some games have been used in education, but more during the early years of instructional technology than recently. But while we were not watching, a video game culture has emerged -- a way of life and a brand new story- and myth-base for a generation of youngsters. We are starting to pay attention now, and starting to wonder if this video game experience might be a golden opportunity. Most students already know the technology, it's just a matter of making it work fof us. On the average, 28% of your students are audio learners and the benefit to them is direct and quick. We also know that the research shows us the more ways we can deliver content, the better the chance of it sticking. As computing becomes cheaper, and access therefore more ubiquitous, the next logical step will be to obtain digital rather than paper texts. University publishers seem to be more amenable to this idea, with a little over a quarter of the market share being in the digital realm. K-12 is a little slower. There are several issues in play here. (Feel free to add to this list)
The current pricing structure in K-12 is to offer the digital text as an "add-on" dependent upon the purchase of the paper text.
Student Perceptions of Digital Textbooks
LiveInk or what you could do with a digital text if you had one
Social<del> "Noteworking"%5BTom</del><del> Story%5D</del><ins> "Noteworking"</ins>
MyWeb 2.0 Up and Coming App of the Year- www.notecentric.com - A "Social Noteworking Site".
Snap!<del> Snap.com</del><del> %5BTom</del><del> Story%5D</del><ins> Snap.com</ins>
Description: image preview site
URLS for learning more:www.snap.com, Our school links site using snap,Bethune Student Links 4th-8th Grade

Tom
Nintendo Wii - Nintendo'snewest game console, becomingknown for it's active/interactive/exercise approach togaming could find it's way into afterschool programs and classrooms. Third party educational games that can be accessed through the Wii browser allow for gamers to play/participate in games created especially for Wii using the Wii remote. Nintendo will also be rolling out it's Mii (pronouncedMe)in the near future, which will involve users to create their Nintendo Mii avatar's and take them into an onlinenetworking environment.I will be testing the Wii out with the AfterschoolBoys and Girls Club in my school next week.
