New Technologies that Are Changing Education

Listen and watch as a panel of ed tech gurus shares online tools and cutting-edge technologies that have the potential to change the way teachers teach, students learn and schools operate.

What’s hot today and what will be tomorrow's "killer apps" for schools?

Introduction/ Welcome

  • Gwen Solomon

--> Somewhere in the intro, I’ll let the audience know that I'm compiling stories, lessons, best practice tips, tutorials, etc. for a second Web 2.0 book and ask them to contribute. Is that okay with everyone?

Bio/ Speaker Intro?

State a brief bio of where you are now, and why you feel that new technologies are important for today's classroom.

Introduction and Formula for Analysis - Conn - 10 min

The Technology Analysis Equation

P= p - i

Performance = potential - interference  (we will use this as a framework to discuss each technology)

Taken from the Inner Game of Tennis

An example:  Document Cameras

These little gems may not be as  "whiz-bang" exciting as some of the other technologies, but if you are looking for some real bang fo ryour buck, they are having a huge impact in our schools, and they can actually be used for some cools stuff like videoblogs.

Global Collaborative Projects - Vicki 5 minutes

Where one can go when interference is minimized

Flat Classroom Project

The Horizon Project (will be in process)

Connecting the Campus - Tom - 10 minutes

WiMaxx

Wireless - WI-MAX. I could touch on this for just a minute if you would like. It is a deep topic, technicallity wise. But I could compare briefly the difference between a wireless access point that covers a section of school building versus a wireless access point that covers a section of a city.

Moodle & other social networking

My Web 2.0 Up and Coming App of the Year

- www.notecentric.com - A "Social Noteworking Site". I made that last part up. Developed by an actual student at the University of New Mexico using Ruby on Rails. The site uses a login/network similiar to that of facebook, where networks are created solely based on the end of an educational email system such as .edu, or .k12.wi.us, etc... Students use the application to add courses, take notes, and share notes with others in the network. There is an RSS on courses, so if a fellow student in Biology 120 just added some new notes and chose to share them, you will be up to date. The system also allows you to create discussion forums within the courses. An extensive search funtion, recently created notes page, and the ability to browse by year, subject, course, semester, will allow students to access notes from past years/courses quickly. Tom

Telling the Story - Conn - 5 minutes

PhotoStory

Digital Storytelling

This is the foundation for many of the previously-mentioned technologies, and is a huge part of our students' lives outside of school.

Web 3D and Second Life - Vicki - 10 minutes

3D environments and learning

Second Life - why its not quite ready yet but kids need to be ready anyway

Shall we play a game?  (And learn too!) - Tom - Wii - 5 minutes

Wii

Nintendo Wii - Nintendo's newest game console, becoming known for it's active/interactive/exercise approach to gaming could find it's way into afterschool programs and classrooms. Third party educational games that can be accessed through the Wii browser allow for gamers to play/participate in games created especially for Wii using the Wii remote. Nintendo will also be rolling out it's Mii (pronounced Me) in the near future, which will involve users to create their Nintendo Mii avatar's and take them into an online networking environment. I will be testing the Wii out with the Afterschool Boys and Girls Club in my school next week. Tom Wii Outsells PS3 in U.S. $13 Billion Dollar Market

Sony Playstation 3 also with a web browser, will be putting out a Beta version of their virtual 3D world. Too big of a topic for me though.

Instant Assessment - Conn - 5 minutes

Tablets / Airliner/ Smart Pads

*IF time, webconferenceing/ video conferencing!

Preventing Problems before they happen - Tom - 5 minutes

Behavior Tracking

The future is in your hand - Conn - 5 minutes

Handhelds, the Sequel - As Ultra-Mobile PCs and devices like the Nokia Internet Tablet drop in cost (and SmartPhones get smarter, and videogame devices like the PSP get wireless connectivity and browsers), ubiquitous net access becomes more and more of a reality, and will definitely be an integral part of our students' futures.

Why some technologies "stick" and others don't

Those of us who have been through this for a while know that sometimes really cool technologies end up disappearing without ever having the impact we expect. Why is that, and how can we better predict this ahead of time? (I spend no more than five minutes talking about this, but I've found it adds a dash of reality to our excited promotion of new stuff.)

Cool Tools for your cool Classroom - Vicki - 5 minutes

Vicki will share her latest cool picks of cool websites!

Q&A

Gwen will lead in Questions and Answers (if there is a live chat, it can be used to pose questions as well.)  We will field questions but leave the last 5-8 minutes for a conclusion

Conclusion

Gwen will ask each participant to ask "If you have one message to leave with our participants today, what would it be?"

We'll go in the order Tom, Vicki, Conn.

From Gwen

Organization

We'll look at technologies of your choice within the framework of your perspective. So for example, Vicki will talk about how Web 3D and other technologies make a difference for student learning. Then Tom will pick up with his perspective on working with teachers to use these and other tools. Finally, Conn will talk about the big picture of tech integration in his region.
